In a historic move, media outlets in Maryland, including WMAR-2 News in Baltimore – an ABC affiliate – have eased their restrictions on airing cannabis brands in news segments and commercials on network television. As fate would have it, your friendly neighborhood cannabis dispensary – KIP in Cockeysville – now holds the title in Maryland as being the first weed brand to be featured on network television EVER!
Back in April, General Manager Matthew Hersh, Clinical Director Dr Alexander Dix, PharmD, and Marketing Manager Jamie-Leigh Bissett, sat down with WMAR’s Elsa M. for a Midday Maryland segment. The segment ran April 27, 2023, and will now live on WMAR’s website as well as Kipcan.com. It was a very neat experience being in a television studio and Elsa was a very kind host.
Though rules have relaxed on television in terms of talking about cannabis, there are still restrictions on what we can and cannot say, which proved limiting. For instance, the words “cannabis,” “dispensary,” “marijuana,” are still heavily restricted, hence why we used “adult-use,” “herbal” or “alternative medicine” instead.
The limitations on language mean we still have more progress to make in our fight against stigmatization. However, to have been on television at all discussing cannabis in a way that is positive and normal seems like a huge step in the right direction. Let’s hope legalization continues trending in this direction.
